Who Manufactures Freightliner® Semi Trucks?

Freightliner

Freightliner semi trucks are some of the most popular among truck owners, and for good reason. This storied line of trucks has origins as far back as 1929, and is manufactured by the Freightliner® Corporation as part of the Daimler AG, better known to drivers as Mercedes-Benz. International Used Truck Centers has details on the history of this Freightliner® trucks manufacturer and information on where these trucks are currently made below!

Who is the Freightliner® Truck Manufacturer: A Timeline

Freightliner trucks began as a division of Consolidated Freightways, a company based in Portland, Oregon. Let’s look at a brief timeline of this company’s long history:

  • 1929: The first of what will soon be known as Freightliner® Trucks is produced in Portland, Oregon, with a design that placed the cab above the front axle. This choice, along with weight reductions, helps make Freightliner® Trucks take on popularity in the 1930s
  • 1942: Company founder Leland James names his Freightliner® manufacturer “The Freightliner Corporation,” a name that will stick. This company produces the first ever all-aluminum cab in the year of its re-christening.
  • 1981: During the upheavals of deregulation, Consolidated Freightways sells the resources of its Freightliner® trucks manufacturers to Daimler-Benz so as to focus on truck manufacturing.
  • 1991: Daimler-Benz takes its medium-duty truck manufacturers off the market and turns it over to Freightliner® manufacturers.
  • 2010: Freightliner® embraces the future and manufactures its first diesel-electric hybrid vehicle.

Where are Freightliner® Trucks Manufacturers Today?

Freightliner manufacturers are still headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and the company makes their trucks across North America.

  • US-Based Freightliner Manufacturers: Currently, Freightliner® trucks are made in Mount Holly, North Carolina and Cleveland, Ohio.
  • Mexico-Based Freightliner Manufacturers: Other locations for Freightliner® factories include Saltillo and Santiago Tianguistenco, both in Mexico.

These plants don’t just produce trucks; Freightliner® manufactures both buses and the Freightliner® Sprinter Van in addition to its well-respected truck lineup!
