Looking for a Prostar with an N13 diesel engine? The N13 calibration is optimized for a balance between performance and fuel economy. The engine is equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR. The N13 SCR engine features a proven emissions control system that injects DEF directly into the exhaust stream, converting harmful nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, water, and small amounts of carbon dioxide.
The result? Fantastic Navistar N13 engine specs and real results on the job. Read on for a closer look at N13 engine reliability, who makes the N13 engine, and more.
You’ve likely heard tales of its unparalleled performance, but you may not be aware of who makes the N13 engine. In fact, it’s designed exclusively for International Trucks by Navistar International. The 2200 Bar High Pressure Common Rail Fuel system is known for its high fuel efficiency ratings, and diesel N13 engine reliability keeps you on the road longer.
Along with performance ratings comparable to many higher displacement engines, a look at Navistar N13 engine specs reveals outstanding fuel economy and proven capability:
(hp @ 1700 rpm)
(lb. – ft. @ 1000 rpm)
(rpm)
(lb. – ft. @ 800 rpm)
(CGI) delivers higher strength and more fatigue resistance than traditional gray iron. Navistar has always used compacted graphite iron for the N13 crankcase.
This design helps maximize durability. The no-fin design delivers consistent performance by preventing soot plugging. Stainless steel throughout the EGR cooler prevents corrosion. Laser welding delivers excellent thermal fatigue resistance.
The 2200 Bar High Pressure Common Rail Fuel system precisely controls fuel atomization, with multiple injection technology. Smooth engine operation and clean combustion extend engine life.
Allows mounting brackets to be molded into the wiring harness. Bolts secure the wiring harnesses, delivering the most consistent routing and clipping of any wiring harness technology.
Used on the crankshaft main journal bearings and connecting rod bearings. When oil pressure is low, such as while starting the engine, the coatings protect the engine from wear as oil pressure builds.
High pressure common rail (HPCR) with multiple injection events precisely atomize fuel. Combustion efficiency is maximized. Low emissions reduce the frequency of after treatment active regenerations, further reducing fuel consumption.
The integrated oil lubrication module includes a thermostat to regulate oil flow through the oil cooler. In cold conditions, oil bypasses the oil cooler allowing oil to reach operating temperature faster, reducing fuel consumption.
The N13 calibration was designed to balance power and efficiency. How can you save on fuel but still achieve the impressive Navistar N13 engine specs? Design features like an optional down-speed rating operates the engine at lower RPM, reducing parasitic drag and pumping losses. Optional programmable parameters such as road speed limiting and predictive cruise control, deliver further fuel savings.
High-strength CGI is stronger pound for-pound than traditional gray iron, allowing for a thinner and lighter crankcase. Aluminum flywheel housing, a hollow camshaft, and Nylon valve covers all deliver significant weight savings compared to traditional construction and materials.
Long-lived and low-maintenance by nature, N13 engine reliability is improved even further by N13 design innovations like the breather. Also known as a crankcase oil separator, it removes oil from the crankcase gases. The centrifugal design does not require regular filter replacement, saving on time and service costs.
Single-stage EGR cooler has been designed for maximum uptime. The EGR cooler’s small size and its ability to leave the EGR valve in place during service make service easy.
A super cartridge service kit allows the turbocharger rotating assembly to be replaced while reusing the housings. Parts and labor costs are reduced significantly.
The fuel doser sprays fuel into the exhaust for active regenerations of the aftertreatment system. The fuel doser sprays air at the end of each use to prevent fuel from dribbling and coking on the tip.
