At the heart of many semi trucks lies the power of a Cummins ISX engine. This on-highway engine delivers impressive power ranging from 430 hp to 620 hp and a maximum 2,050 lb-ft of torque, and has made a name for itself in the trucking industry. Cummins ISX History
In 2001, the ISX replaced the N14 due to changes in emissions regulations. The Cummins ISX engine offered increased fuel efficiency, as well as quicker processing, thanks to its “interact system.” This system puts the “IS” in “ISX” and is an HPI (High-Pressure Injection) system that came to replace the CELECT fuel system.
In 2002, the Cummins ISX engine reduced NOx emissions with its new, cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system. This feature uses recirculated and cooled exhaust gas into the intake chamber in order to lower the temperature of the combustion chamber.
The engine was redesigned again in 2010 to reflect improvements made in emission technologies, changing it from a dual-camshaft system to a single overhead camshaft. The need to have the pressurized fuel from an injector camshaft was circumvented with the creation of a common rail fuel system.
