What is the “Heat Leap”?

The “Heat Leap” refers to the dramatic fluctuation in ambient air temperature from the early morning hours to the peak heat of the afternoon. As a general rule, tire pressure typically changes about 2% for every 10°F temperature change. While 2% might not sound like a lot, a 30- to 40-degree temperature swing during a summer haul can lead to a drastic shift in your tire pressure. When your tires experience this leap, the air inside naturally expands. Operating pressures will naturally rise throughout the day. This increase is expected and does not necessarily indicate overinflation. Overinflated tires balloon in the center, reducing the tire’s contact patch with the asphalt. This leads to poor handling, decreased braking performance, and accelerated, uneven tread wear down the center line of the tire.

The Real Dangers of Summer Heat on Commercial Tires

The “Heat Leap” does more than just mess with your PSI; it compounds the severe stress that summer weather already places on commercial tires. 

Furthermore, extreme heat weakens the internal bonding of the tire layers. When combined with the high speeds of highway driving and the PSI fluctuations of the Heat Leap, the risk of tread separation skyrockets. If your tires are underinflated to begin with, the combination of hot weather, underinflation, and a heavy cargo load creates excessive friction and heat buildup. Tire blowouts are significantly more common during the summer months for exactly this reason, leading to costly downtime and serious safety hazards.

Essential Tire Maintenance Tips to Beat the Heat

Managing morning-to-afternoon PSI fluctuations requires a proactive approach to commercial truck tire maintenance. Here are the essential steps every driver and fleet manager should follow to combat the Heat Leap:

  • Check Tire Pressure When Cold: The absolute most critical rule for managing PSI fluctuations is to check your tire pressure before you start driving for the day. Tires are considered “cold” when they haven’t been driven on for at least three hours. Checking them in the cool morning air gives you an accurate baseline before the Heat Leap takes effect. Always use a high-quality digital or dial gauge, and compare readings against the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
  • Never Bleed Hot Tires: If you check your tire pressure in the middle of a hot afternoon and notice the PSI is higher than the recommendation, do not let the air out. This pressure increase is a normal reaction to the Heat Leap. Bleeding a hot tire will leave it dangerously underinflated once the temperatures drop again that evening.
  • Inspect Tread Depth and Wear: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates a legal minimum tread depth of 4/32” on steer tires and 2/32” on all other tires. Worn treads reduce traction and are highly susceptible to heat-related failures. Look out for bald spots, uneven wear patterns, and embedded objects.
  • Look for Visible Damage: Before you hit the road, conduct a thorough visual inspection. Look for cracks, sidewall bulges, punctures, or signs of dry rot. Even if the tire is holding air, external damage can quickly turn into a blowout when subjected to extreme heat.
  • Maintain Proper Alignment and Balance: Potholes from the winter season can easily throw off your truck’s alignment. Misalignment causes uneven drag, generating additional friction and heat. Follow your tire manufacturer’s and fleet maintenance program’s recommendations for rotation and tire position management.
