With the current shortage of used trucks, now is a great time to trade in your current truck, and upgrade to a newer one! Year over year the truck industry has seen a 50% rise in used truck values. What this means for you is that you may have dramatically increased equity in your truck over last year! When trading in your truck, there are certain things that dealers look for that help them assign a value to your truck. Follow the guidelines below to get the maximum appraised value for your trade!
Clean: Make sure your truck is clean when taking it in for an appraisal. A clean truck will help highlight the benefits of the truck, and let the appraiser know that it is consistently maintained and well taken care of.
DOT: Having a fresh DOT on your truck will minimize the work needed to get the truck ready for resale.
Brakes and Tires: Trucks with tires and brakes that meet DOT minimums is great but having a truck that has 50% or more tire and brake life left can dramatically increase appraised value.
Mileage: A good rule of thumb when it comes to mileage is there is a significant price drop when a truck reaches 750k miles, so there is a benefit to trading before you reach this threshold.
Warranty: If your truck has an existing and transferable warranty, make sure to provide all the documents to the appraiser. Don’t overlook any remaining warranty, chassis, transmission, engine or aftertreatment.
Overhaul or Major Repairs: It’s okay if your truck has had an overhaul or major repairs like a turbo replacement, just make sure you provide all the supporting documents for the appraiser to review.
Title and liens: Make sure that the title is in your name; and/or that all lien and payoff information is provided to the appraiser. Payoffs must be current, usually within 7 days of the time you plan to execute your trade in.
Maintenance: Provide any maintenance records you have kept on the truck. This is another way you can show you took great care of your rig.
Accessories: If there are accessories that you plan to trade in with the truck such as a refrigerator, tripack or inverter, let the appraiser know. Each of these items adds value to the truck whether they are new or used.
