Dump trucks use a rear hinge and hydraulic rams to deposit material onto the ground from an open-box bed—and landscape waste transport is just one of the many uses for medium-duty trucks. A landscape dump truck is built on this foundation but adds tall stakes along the sides. As a result, the landscape dump body is able to contain a high volume of landscape waste. Most landscape dump models also have tie-down points for securing landscaping tools.

Standard side stakes are 42 inches high, but you can also select higher or lower stake heights for your landscape dump body. In general, the increased capacity afforded by higher landscape dump truck sides will provide more value with each delivery.

What is a Medium-Duty Landscape Dump Truck?

You know that landscape dump trucks are considered to be medium duty, but what is a medium duty truck, exactly? Medium duty trucks can be configured with a wide range of body types to tackle just about any task! Vehicles that fall under the “medium duty” umbrella are those in truck classes 4, 5, and 6—which means that they have a gross vehicle weight rating of between 14,001 and 26,000 pounds.

Standard vs. Dovetail Landscape Dump Body

There are two main landscape dump body types: standard and dovetail. What’s the difference? Generally, standard landscape dump trucks are used to transport landscaping and waste materials, and not to transport heavy lawn care machinery like mowers and compactors. These models have a solid bed and solid steel or aluminum side panels.

If you’re operating on large commercial sites and need to take your equipment with you, you’ll want to consider a dovetail landscape dump body. These models have shorter sides than standard landscape dump bodies, except for a taller rear panel that doubles as a barrier and loading platform for heavy machinery.
