If you are transporting goods that must be kept cold, a refrigerated truck is the way to go. Known colloquially as a “reefer,” a refrigerated truck trailer uses an onboard cooling system to maintain a steady temperature that is safe for perishables. You can find medium-duty refrigerated trucks for sale with a box length ranging from nine feet to as long as 28 feet.
How Does a Refrigerated Truck Work?
The cooling mechanism used by a refrigerated truck is actually very similar to the way a radiator works to cool an engine:
- First, the compressor draws in refrigerant and converts it from a gas to a liquid. This gives off heat and warms the refrigerant.
- Next, the heated refrigerant enters the condenser. Here, its heat is transferred to the tubing walls and then to the fins on the outside of the condenser.
- The outside air is cooled through the condenser fan.
- After transferring most of its heat to the condenser, the cooled refrigerant liquid goes to the evaporator, where it expands and is converted once again into a gas.
- The air from the trailer is blown over the evaporator and back into the compressor, where the cycle begins again.
Why Invest in a Refrigerated Truck?
There are a wide variety of body styles to choose from when you need to transport perishable cargo, including International DuraStar® refrigerated trucks for sale right here at International Used Truck Center. Why upgrade your fleet or get started as an owner-operator with a refrigerated box truck or semi-truck? Here are just a few of the advantages of refrigerated trucks for sale near you:
- Demand – There’s always demand for fresh goods, so market conditions won’t have much impact on your business.
- Protection – A refrigerated trailer is fully enclosed, so it offers great protection from spoilage, theft, weather, and other damage.
- Versatility – A refrigerated truck can also be used to ship dry goods and other items that may not need a cool temperature. A dry van, on the other hand, can’t be used to ship perishable goods.
