Getting to see America’s most famous roadside attractions—and even some of the world’s largest roadside attractions—is one of the many perks of being an OTR driver. Health-wise, it’s a good idea to get out of your truck and stretch your legs every now and then, and getting some exercise will help you to sleep better and wake up rested the next morning. Plus, planning to visit roadside attractions can give you something fun to look forward to at the end of your workday.
Although you certainly won’t always feel up to it after 10 hours on the road, an uneventful day can also leave you with energy to spare before you turn in for the night. In that case, we suggest taking a quick detour to check out one of the eccentric roadside attractions that are scattered across the US interstate system! Below, International Used Truck Center covers our top five roadside attractions for OTM drivers.
Cadillac Ranch: Amarillo, TX
If you’re passing through north Texas with some time to spare, you won’t regret stopping by Cadillac Ranch. As one of America’s most famous roadside attractions, you’ve probably heard of it—a lineup of ten half-buried Cadillac sedans that have been attracting visitors (and spraypainted signatures) since 1974. It may not be among the world’s largest roadside attractions, but it’s a must-see for tourists from abroad and American adventurers alike.
Iowa 80 Truckstop: Walcott, IA
If you’re looking for a truck stop and roadside attractions all rolled into one, head for Iowa 80. Nestled next to the small town of Walcott, it’s a destination for both drivers and tourists—enjoy a wide range of grab-and-go dining options, trucking accessories, replacement parts, and amenities such as an EV charging station, a cat scale, and even a barbershop.
Garden of One Thousand Buddhas: Arlee, MT
Those who prefer quieter roadside attractions may want to carve out some time for the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. You’ll find it in a peaceful valley of the Flathead Reservation, home of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The architectural arrangement of the one thousand hand-cast Buddha statues is based on the eight-spoked Dharma wheel. This sacred symbol evokes the awakening (or turning) of selflessness and wisdom.
Giant Cuckoo Clock: Sugarcreek, OH
If you’re looking for the “world’s largest” type of roadside attraction, there are plenty to be found all across the country! This 23-foot-tall cuckoo clock is fully functional, chiming every half hour with a cuckoo bird and a dancing couple accompanied by a Swiss polka band.
World’s Largest Ball of Sisal Twine: Cawker City, KS
If you want to see all of the best “world’s largest” roadside attractions, you should not miss out on this classic. Built by the community of Cawker City, Kansas, it’s located just 30 miles from the geographic center of the U.S. The record-breaking landmark is always growing, too: visitors are invited to add to its girth with their own length of twine.
