Trucking Awesome Yoga: An In-Cab Routine for Hauls out of Chicago, Atlanta, and Beyond
Whether you are starting your route near the historic Route 66 Raceway by our Joliet, IL center or heading out past the World of Coca-Cola near our Atlanta location, this quick routine will keep you limber. Ensure your commercial vehicle is safely parked with the parking brake engaged and the engine turned off. Sit up straight in your seat, plant your feet firmly on the floorboard, and prepare to stretch.
- Minute 1: The Posture Reset & Deep Breathing. Begin by actively fighting the trucker’s slouch. Roll your shoulders up toward your ears, then pull them back and drop them down. Imagine a string pulling the crown of your head toward the roof of the cab. For one full minute, practice deep, diaphragmatic breathing to oxygenate the blood and relax the nervous system.
- Minute 2: The Seated Spinal Twist. Tight hips and a tight lower back go hand in hand. To relieve tension, place your right hand on the armrest, or seat base, and your left hand on the outside of your left thigh. Gently twist your torso to the left, looking over your shoulder. Hold for thirty seconds. Switch sides and twist to the right for the remaining thirty seconds.
- Minutes 3 & 4: Seated Figure-Four Hip Stretch. This is the ultimate move for tight hips and sciatic relief. While seated, lift your right leg and carefully place your right ankle across your left thigh, just above the knee. Keep your back straight and gently lean forward from your hips. You will feel a deep stretch in your right hip. Hold for one minute. Slowly release, switch legs, and repeat on the left side for another minute.
- Minute 5: Seated Pelvic Tilts. Wake up your core and lower back with pelvic tilts. With your hands resting lightly on the steering wheel, press your lower back flat into the lumbar support by tucking your pelvis backward. Hold for a few seconds, then release and gently arch your lower back forward. Alternate smoothly for one minute to lubricate the spinal discs and relieve compressed hip flexors.
