Let’s face it, one of the best parts of truck driving is the freedom to blast your favorite tunes while you cruise — and there are no neighbors to disturb on the open road. If you’re considering upgrading your truck’s audio system, you’ve got plenty of options to ensure you get the best possible sound quality. Additionally, you don’t have to make your upgrades all at once; you can add truck parts and accessories here and there until you have a system you love. Check out International Used Truck Centers‘ handy guide below to learn more about upgrading truck audio systems for cheap, as well as other accessories that can make your ride enjoyable.

Update Your Receiver

If you want more power from your audio system, installing a new receiver will do the trick. You’ll also get crisper and clearer sound from your speakers, whether you’re listening to a radio show during lunch or tearing down the highways to your favorite tunes. Many receivers come with additional features, such as iPod® or MP3 player compatibility, Pandora® Internet Radio, HD Radio™, and SiriusXM® Radio.

There’s a wide range of receivers to choose from, whether you drive an International, Kenworth, or Freightliner. For example, you can opt for a Pioneer MVH-2400NEX digital receiver with an AM/FM tuner, a customizable 7-inch LCD touchscreen, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ capability, Siri Hands Free, Pandora®, and more — all for around $400. Want one without all the frills? You can find a receiver like the Kenwood KDC-168U for around $130, which includes a built-in MOSFET amplifier, plays CDs, and features iPod®/iPhone control and Music Control for select Android phones.

Replace the Speakers

Replacing the receiver isn’t always necessary. Sometimes, simply upgrading the speakers can boost sound quality. The best part? You don’t have to replace all of the speakers in your cab in one go — you can prioritize the speakers closest to the driver’s seat, then branch out when you’re ready. Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose models that are compatible with your truck’s audio system. For example, if you drive an International ProStar Premium semi truck, your door speakers and sleeper speakers should measure about 6 ½ inches for good sound quality.

Give Your Speakers More Power

Adding an amplifier gives the speakers more juice, so road noise doesn’t get in the way of you enjoying your music. The right amplifier can give your speakers more clarity as well, and you’ll be able to hear details you may have never noticed before. You’ll need a 4-channel amp to give the front and rear speakers a jolt. One great option is the Audiopipe® Class D 4-Channel 1000W amplifier, which is a universal part that can be installed on a wide range of truck models and is available for around $100.

Add a Touch of Bass

For even more oomph, you can install a subwoofer. A good subwoofer can add depth to your music and make bopping along more enjoyable. There are a few different types of subwoofers, such as a component, enclosed, and powered. Component subs are better picks for drivers who want to build a customized system, while enclosed and powered subs are off-the-shelf options that are easier to install. With a dedicated mono amp, your subwoofer will have all the power it needs deliver maximum thump.
