When it comes to categorizing the different types of trucks, there are nine distinct classifications that are further categorized into three main sections: light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty. The classes range from one through nine with class two have two separate categories. These distinctions help determine a wide number of things such as licensing requirements and maintenance needs. So what is a medium-duty truck, exactly?

So What is a Medium-Duty Truck?

Now that you know a little more about the classifications, it’ll be easier to understand that medium-duty trucks occupy classes four through six in the nine-class system we talked about moments ago. They also have a gross vehicle weight rating range of 14,001- 26,000 pounds. These sizes of vehicles can include garbage trucks, delivery trucks, utility trucks, and more.   • Class 4: 14,001 to 16,000 pounds
  • Class 5: 16,001 to 19,500 pounds
  • Class 6: 19,501 to 26,000 pounds
