Tire Inspection & Maintenance: What Every Operator Should Know
The Rolling Rig
Keep a worry-free truck with these maintenance tips!
Regular tire inspections are essential for safety, performance, and extending tire life. Check tires frequently for proper inflation and abnormal wear. Any tire with cuts, punctures, blisters, bumps, or exposed belts should be repaired or replaced immediately. Remove stones or debris lodged in tread grooves before they cause damage.
Proper inflation, correct toe‑in alignment, appropriate loads, and safe driving speeds all play a major role in tire life, fuel economy, handling, and ride quality.
Load Safety Matters
Never exceed a tire’s rated load capacity. Overloading shortens tire life and creates dangerous conditions that can lead to sudden tire failure, property damage, injury, or worse.
Tire Rotation Helps Extend Life
Rotating tires can reduce irregular wear:
- Move unevenly worn steering tires to rear positions.
- Swap tires in dual assemblies if one wears faster than the other.
- Rotate drive axle tires side‑to‑side to help correct heel, toe, or uneven wear patterns.
When to Replace Tires
- Front (steering) axle: Replace at 4/32 inch (3 mm) tread depth or less. Retreads are not recommended for steering axles.
- Rear axles: Replace at 2/32 inch (2 mm) or less.
- Regroovable tires may be regrooved if at least 3/32 inch (2.38 mm) of undertread remains.
Understanding Tire Wear
- Even wear indicates proper use and maintenance.
- Erosion (rolling) wear is normal on free‑rolling tires and typically needs no correction.
- Shoulder or chamfer wear can be normal for radial tires when both shoulders wear evenly.
Addressing Irregular Wear
Irregular wear reduces tire life and affects handling. To minimize it:
- Maintain proper inflation for the load.
- Keep wheels aligned and balanced.
- Inspect shocks, suspension components, and wheel bearings regularly.
- Use the correct tire type for your operation.
A proactive tire maintenance routine improves safety, performance, and overall operating costs—making it a smart investment for every fleet.
