If you drive a diesel truck, you’re probably familiar with the diesel particulate filter – or the DPF. When working properly, the DPF filters out the ash and soot from your exhaust gas to keep everything clean. But over time, a clogged DPF filter causes major problems on the roads. From sluggish performance to failed emissions tests, familiarizing yourself with the signs of a clogged DPF filter can help you pinpoint the issue and resolve it quickly. Learn all about the key clogged DPF filter symptoms with International Used Truck Center, and stop by for more trucking tips.
Top 6 Signs of a Clogged DPF Filter
- Engine Management Light: When you have a clogged DPF filter, your dashboard might give you the first clue. Sensors in your truck can detect a clogged DPF from the extra heat that it generates, triggering the light to pop up.
- Reduced Engine Performance: A clogged DPF filter can also hinder your performance quite a bit, because the exhaust is obstructed. This means that acceleration is weak on the roads, and you might find yourself hitting the gas more aggressively to maintain your usual power.
- Poor Fuel Economy: Poor performance will also affect your fuel economy, and you might notice this when you fill up at the gas pump. Since your engine has to work harder, you’ll burn fuel at a more rapid rate.
- Starting Problems: A clogged DPF filter also increases the pressure within the engine, which means it has more difficulty starting. In severe cases, it may not start at all. You might also find that your turbocharger is damaged by the excess heat and pressure.
- Odd Odors: When your filter is packed with debris, exhaust gasses have no place to go. This builds up and creates odd odors. Not only is this unpleasant to breathe, but it can also cause a fire hazard for you.
- Check Engine Light: When you have a clogged DPF filter, your dashboard might give you the first clue. Sensors in your truck can detect a clogged DPF from the extra heat and/or pressure that it generates, triggering the light to pop up and/or and auditory alarm. HOW MUCH DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID SHOULD I USE FOR MY VEHICLE?
The amount of DEF needed is different for each truck, always check your owner’s manual. A good rule of thumb – the truck is designed so DEF and diesel run out at roughly the same time.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I RUN OUT OF DEF?
In the United States and depending on the year of the truck, your diesel engine will not start if you run out of diesel exhaust fluid. That’s because your DEF reservoir detects how much of the fluid you have in the tank.
WHERE CAN I ORDER DEF?
The best way is to order it through a wholesaler to get quality DEF. It has a shelf life of about 12 months. In a pinch, you can get some at an auto parts store or refueling station. A refueling station is most common as the DEF pump is right next to the diesel pump in many cases.
