What is an APU? “APU” is an acronym that stands for “auxiliary power unit”, or a unit that produces power without a driver having to idle their truck. APUs are typically used to help heat or cool the cab without wasting fuel in the tank, but can also be used as auxiliary power for a TV or electronics during a break. Installing and finding the right truck APU for your semi can be daunting – but International Used Truck Center is here to help. Learn more about the different types of semi truck APUs and what may be right for your needs with International Used Truck Center.

Different Semi Truck APU Types

The first step in finding an APU for your truck is deciding what kind to buy. The current APU market is divided into two types: diesel-powered APUs and electric APUs. Determining which type of APU is best for your model depends on your needs:

Diesel-Powered APUs

Diesel-powered APUs attach to the frame of your tractor and use the truck’s diesel tank to run a small combustion engine. These small engines use much less fuel than the tractor, allowing you to heat or cool your cab efficiently even when the tractor is not running. You may choose a diesel-powered APU if you prefer:

  • An alternative power source fueled by diesel (and, in some cases, alternative fuel sources)
  • Unlimited power to heat and cool so long as there’s fuel in the tank
  • A power source that will last over long periods of time

Electric APUs

Much like diesel-powered APUs, electric APUs hook up to your tractor frame, providing an extra set of batteries to heat and cool your cab when the tractor isn’t in operation. While the batteries have a limited charge capacity, some electric APUs come with an option to automatically start the tractor’s engine when drained. You’ll likely choose an electric APU if you prefer:

  • A low-emission power source
  • A power source that’s quiet while running
  • Short-term power between long-haul drives

Whichever style of APU you choose, they’ll accomplish the same goal: keeping you comfortable and saving fuel. That said, even with all the benefits of truck APUs, it’s important that you research and buy an APU that fits within your fleet or truck’s chassis. When looking to get an APU fitted you should consult with your APU provider to find the best fit.

Semi Truck APU Maintenance

A diesel-powered APU will require more maintenance than an all-electric APU, but maintenance on either is still important. Any diesel-powered APU will need to have oil changes and fuel filters reviewed regularly, whereas an electric APU will need to have just a general connection review and a battery replacement within its lifespan.

If your model is fitted with an APU be sure to schedule proper maintenance for it alongside your regular recommended maintenance appointments!
